Acknowledgements of Rector

Since its establishment in 1966, Can Tho University (CTU) has greatly received both material and spiritual support from an enormous number of higher education institutions and organizations in Europe, America, and Asia Pacific. Thanks to this valuable assistance, we have continuously improved ourselves, developed, and made excellent contributions to the socio-economic development of the Mekong River Delta, in particular, and Viet Nam, in general. Importantly, many of you have come and worked with us during our most difficult time, when the infrastructure remained still very poor and the faculty and staff’s professional levels were very low.

On the occasion of our 40th Anniversary, I would like to extend our sincere thanks and deep gratitude to those organizations on behalf of CTU. The International Forum on “Globalization and Integration in Higher Education” on October 16th, 2006 provides an excellent opportunity for us to look back at our successes and failures, to give an overview of current world trends in higher education, and to delineate directions for our future development. Over the past few weeks, we have received abstracts, full texts, and power-point presentations from educational specialists from a variety of universities and organizations worldwide such as the University of Sydney in Australia, Ghent University in Belgium, Kyoto Institute of Technology and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in Japan, KUSTEM University in Malaysia, Groningen University and Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Benguet State University in the Philippines, Michigan State University, Texas Tech University and the University of Akron in the United States, and Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, National University of Ho Chi Minh City and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Viet Nam.

Our special thanks go to all of you for your excellent work that appears in this summary record. Despite extremely busy schedules at your home institutions, you all have tried your best to work with us and send us these interesting articles and power- point presentations on time. Your profound knowledge and insightful new ideas in these articles will surely be a valuable source of reference for our university’s leaders, staff, faculty, and students. However, due to the time limitation, not all participating higher education institutions could prepare presentations. Thus, we hope to receive the rest of these on another occasion. I wish you all good health and great success in the years to come and that our relationships will continue to expand and enhance.
